Every Locker Is Full? Do This in the Next 60 Seconds

Move out of the walkway and choose your next destination. Follow this order, stopping as soon as you find an option that works:

1. Try another locker area. Use the station map or Multi Ecube’s availability search to find lockers on another floor or by another entrance.
2. Go to a staffed counter. Tokyo Station has four JR counters inside and outside the gates. In Kyoto, head to Crosta Kyoto on B1 outside the gates; in Osaka, use Crosta Osaka on the north side of the first floor, outside the gates.
3. Reserve nearby storage. Open ecbo cloak or Bounce and select a location with room for your bags and suitable collection hours. Plan C explains both.
4. Send the bags onward. Multi Ecube hotel delivery requires booking by 9:30 a.m.; Crosta Kyoto accepts its hotel-delivery service until 2:00 p.m. See Plan D for destinations and prices.

With children beside you, having a destination helps more than another lap around the concourse. The station table below gives you the counter locations and opening hours together.

Why Coin Lockers Fill Up in Japan (and Exactly When)

There’s no exact hour, but here’s the pattern travelers report: weekend mornings can already be busy, later in the day can be difficult, and larger compartments can be harder to find. Nobody publishes a dependable hour when lockers fill up, so plan a backup for weekends and holiday periods.

A traveler on Reddit’s r/JapanTravelTips wrote, “At Osaka station, on weekend they can get full as fast as 10am”. Another reported that “lockers were all full, especially later in the day or after rush hour”. These are individual accounts, so an earlier arrival still needs a backup plan.

Size is part of the problem: another comment said, “not many are large enough to fit medium size suitcases”. You may see empty compartments and still have nowhere to put your case.

Travelers also describe finding coin-operated lockers when IC-card lockers were full. Carrying both payment options gives you more places to try without changing your route.

Coin Locker Basics: Sizes, Prices, the 3-Day Rule, and How to Pay

Use your suitcase’s measurements to choose a locker size. For Multi Ecube at Tokyo Station, these are the example daily prices and approximate compartment heights:

A carry-on may suit an S or M compartment, a medium suitcase an L, and a large or wide case an LW. These are starting points: measure the whole bag, including wheels and handles, because height alone doesn’t determine whether it fits.

Prices vary by station. Some stations also raise M and L prices by ¥100–200 (about $1) during busy periods, and Multi Ecube’s charging day changes at 2:00 a.m., not after 24 hours.

Storage is usually up to 3 days, including the day you store it (some operators allow 4). JR East Group lockers use the three-day limit; Tokyo Metro-operated lockers allow four days.

For the JR East Group rules described here, bags are removed on the fourth day and held for 30 days before disposal. Daily charges continue during that holding period, and collection requires cash payment and identification.

Payment systems include coins, transport IC cards such as Suica, and app-based options. Some newer lockers are cashless: Multi Ecube at Kyoto Station’s Hachijo Exit doesn’t accept cash, so carrying both coins and an IC card gives you useful alternatives.

Yes, You Can Reserve a Coin Locker in Japan — Here’s How

You can reserve a Multi Ecube locker from one month before use, for up to three days. The fee is ¥500 (about $3) per compartment, plus the normal daily storage charge.

For example, reserving a Tokyo Station L locker for one day costs ¥500 + ¥900 = ¥1,400 (about $9). The reservation fee applies to each compartment, so use the number your group needs when comparing costs.

1. Create an account on the reservation site. Use an email address you can open during your trip and follow the payment instructions.
2. Choose the date, station, location, and size. Match the locker to your suitcase and your route through the station.
3. Review the total and complete the reservation. The total includes the reservation fee and your selected days of storage.
4. Open the arrival-day email. Locker details and a QR code normally arrive around 2:05 a.m.; have them ready at your reserved locker.

The official search lists around 744 locations, including about 30 at Tokyo Station, on both sides of the ticket gates. Kyoto Station has one at the Hachijo Exit, outside the gates, with daily rates of S ¥500 (about $3), M ¥800 (about $5), and L ¥1,000 (about $6).

There isn’t a Multi Ecube location at JR Osaka Station itself. Nearby options are at Osaka Metro Umeda and Higashi-Umeda stations and Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station, so select the exact station name when booking.

Plan B Inside the Station: Staffed Baggage Counters

Head to a staffed counter if you want to keep the bags at the station. Staff can handle the storage arrangements while you keep the group together nearby.

JR East Logistics’ baggage storage service charges per item, per day, including tax. Its categories use height, width, and depth added together:

Counters can reach capacity too: Crosta’s official FAQ says it may stop accepting bags when full. The same Osaka traveler quoted above also wrote, “There are cloak service that can store your luggage, but I have seen that get full too.”

Plan C Near the Station: ecbo cloak, 7-Eleven, and Bounce

Use nearby storage when the station counters don’t work for your route. A shop near your sightseeing stop can also save you a return to the station before heading to your hotel.

ecbo cloak suits you if you want to reserve at a participating 7-Eleven or another nearby location: suitcase storage starts at ¥800 (about $5) per day, with compensation up to ¥100,000 (about $645) per item, subject to its terms. Bags whose longest side is under 45 cm start at ¥500 (about $3) per day; the suitcase category starts at 45 cm, and prices vary by location.

As of July 15, 2026, more than 1,000 participating 7-Eleven stores across 42 prefectures offered the service. Search for the individual branch in ecbo cloak, select your dates and bag count, and complete the booking for your chosen location.

The Tokyo page advertises storage from ¥275 (about $2) per day. For a more useful suitcase example, one partner near Yaesu North Exit showed ¥850 (about $5) per item, per day on September 16, 2026, before the payment screen; other locations charge differently.

Enter your dates and bags, select a partner on your route, and review the total before booking. Bounce counts calendar days, so storing a bag from today until tomorrow costs two days.

As far as Bounce’s own map shows, none of its partners are inside Tokyo or Kyoto Station. For either platform, use the listing’s luggage handover hours—not the shop or hotel’s name—to choose an early-morning or late-night option, and reserve a participating branch rather than walking into any 7-Eleven.

Plan D: Too Big or Too Many? Send It to Your Hotel Instead

Send your luggage ahead if you won’t need it while sightseeing. For a family, removing the collection trip can be just as helpful as removing the weight.

With Multi Ecube hotel delivery, book by 9:30 a.m., deposit by 11:00 a.m., and your bags arrive at the hotel front desk by 6:00 p.m. The price is ¥1,500–2,700 (about $10–17) per locker, including the reservation and locker-use fees.

The service covers listed hotels in Tokyo’s 23 wards, Urayasu, Osaka City, Kyoto City, Hakata, Sendai, and Atami. Choose your hotel from the eligible-hotel list, then select the departure location and compartment.

S, M, L, and LW lockers can be used, but SS lockers, bags over 30 kg, and fragile items are excluded; a bag that doesn’t fit isn’t grounds for a refund. Put evening essentials in your day bag and measure the suitcase before reserving.

In Kyoto, Crosta Kyoto also delivers to accommodation in Kyoto City for ¥1,500 (about $10) per item. Hand over your bags by 2:00 p.m., then collect them at your accommodation from 5:00 p.m. onward.

Compare the whole group’s total, not just the starting price on a search page. The examples below cover one day of storage or the stated delivery journey, using one locker per suitcase where lockers are involved.

Many of these storage examples come to roughly ¥2,500–5,000 (about $16–32), although JR’s L-category bags cost more. Sending bags costs roughly two to four times as much, depending on the comparison, but removes the return journey to collect your bags—a useful tradeoff with children and a long onward trip.

A positive reply gives you a destination straight from the station. It can be especially useful when you’re spending the day near the hotel and returning there anyway.

Department stores and tourist information centers sometimes have their own services. Use the individual official website to find who can use them, opening hours, and the collection deadline before adding one to your route.
