8 Kansai Trains Worth Paying Extra For (2026): Comfortable Seats, Great Views, and How to Book Each One

Quick Answer: The 8 Trains at a Glance

You want something nicer than an ordinary train between Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara—but finding the booking page can feel harder than choosing the ride. My first pick is Aoniyoshi between Kyoto and Kintetsu-Nara: about 35 minutes, with seats that make the journey part of your day out.

The table below compares scenic trains in Kansai by route, price, booking site, and release time. As a mother living in Japan, I’ve put together the choices and booking steps using each operator’s official information. Start with the route already in your itinerary, then choose the seat or scenery you’d enjoy.

Choose just one: Aoniyoshi, Kyoto ⇄ Kintetsu-Nara, about 35 minutes.
Choose one with no extra fee: Kyo-train Garaku, running on weekends and holidays only.

Prices checked in September 2026 are adult, regular-season fares. Children generally pay about half, but check each operator’s age categories and supplement rules. Prices and operating days can change, so check the official site before booking.

If Aoniyoshi is sold out, a regular Kintetsu limited express from Kyoto to Kintetsu-Nara takes about 35 minutes and costs ¥1,280 (about $9). This Klook product includes the base fare: Kyoto to Nara Kintetsu limited express ticket on Klook.

Before You Book: One Ride, Two Tickets

Think of a limited express journey as two payments: the base fare gets you between stations, and the limited express ticket lets you use that train. “Two tickets” describes the fare structure; it doesn’t necessarily mean carrying two pieces of paper.

Suica or ICOCA generally pays the base fare on these routes. When a limited express ticket is required, tapping through the gate is not enough. For setting up and using an IC card, see my Suica vs PASMO guide.

Kintetsu’s English booking site sells the limited express ticket side of the journey. Pay the base fare separately by tapping your IC card at the gates or buying a base-fare ticket. A booking confirmation does not mean you have paid every part of the journey.

Aoniyoshi, Hinotori, and Shimakaze also require a special car fee. For Aoniyoshi from Kyoto to Kintetsu-Nara, the breakdown is ¥760 base fare + ¥520 limited express ticket + ¥210 special car fee, totaling ¥1,490 (about $10).

Kyo-train Garaku is the exception: you pay only the ordinary base fare. Keihan Premium Car uses a separate Premium Car ticket on top of the base fare.

The Klook regular limited express products to Nara mentioned here, departing from Osaka-Namba or Kyoto, include the base fare. Don’t assume that every other Klook rail product does too.

Where and When to Buy Tickets (Official Site, Station, or Klook?)

Start with the operator’s official booking site: it is the most direct way to check trains and choose available seats. English booking is available for the operators below except Keihan, where an English-language platform machine is a practical alternative.

Release times differ. All times below are Japan Standard Time (JST), not the time in your home country.

Klook offers English checkout and card payment; its Sagano product also allows free cancellation up to 48 hours before. That does not mean earlier access to seats or guaranteed availability.

Sagano seats go on sale one month before travel at midnight JST. An earlier application elsewhere does not mean a seat is secured. For a November foliage trip, aim to book directly when official sales open.

Klook’s Thunderbird product is an open-date ticket valid for 90 days. A QR code without a departure time does not identify a reserved train; follow the product’s redemption and seat-reservation instructions.

Aoniyoshi: Osaka ⇄ Nara ⇄ Kyoto

If Kyoto and Nara are already in your itinerary, Aoniyoshi is my first choice to investigate. The purple sightseeing train has twin seats for two, salon seating for three or four, and an onboard sales counter. You can add a special train ride without planning a separate day trip.

• Route & time: Kyoto → Kintetsu-Nara and Osaka-Namba → Kintetsu-Nara take about 35 minutes. Osaka-Namba → Kyoto via Nara takes about 1 hour 21 minutes. There are 8 services daily, usually with no service on Thursdays.
• Price: Kyoto → Kintetsu-Nara: ¥1,490 (about $10); Osaka-Namba → Kintetsu-Nara: ¥1,410 (about $10); Osaka-Namba → Kyoto: ¥2,270 (about $15).
• How to book: Kintetsu’s English booking site opens one month before at 10:30 a.m. JST. Aoniyoshi is not sold on Klook. For a regular limited express alternative: Osaka-Namba to Nara Kintetsu limited express ticket on Klook.
• Worth it? The short Kyoto–Nara ride makes it easier to plan around children’s attention spans than a long sightseeing journey.
• Family & luggage note: Salon seats accommodate three or four. There is luggage storage, free Wi-Fi, and an accessible toilet.

For a particular departure or seating arrangement, check when sales open. If it is unavailable, the regular Osaka-Namba → Kintetsu-Nara limited express takes about 35 minutes and costs ¥1,200 (about $8). Check the weekday timetable first: there are gaps in daytime service.

Hinotori: Osaka ⇄ Nagoya (Better Than the Shinkansen?)

Choose the Shinkansen for speed; consider Hinotori for its seats and price. Hinotori has Premium and Regular (Standard) cars—“Standard Car” is the name on Kintetsu’s English site. Both have back-shell seats, so reclining does not push the seat back into the space behind you.

• Route & time: Osaka-Namba → Kintetsu-Nagoya, about 2 hours 10 minutes. Nagoya-bound limited expresses leaving Osaka-Namba on the hour are Hinotori.
• Price: Premium: ¥5,690 (about $38); Regular: ¥4,990 (about $34).
• How to book: Kintetsu’s English booking site opens one month before at 10:30 a.m. JST. Station sales are also available. On Klook, choose the train and seat type: Hinotori and Shimakaze tickets on Klook.
• Worth it? A good candidate when time aboard is part of your trip. Choose the Shinkansen when having more time in Nagoya matters more.
• Family & luggage note: Free large-luggage lockers, free Wi-Fi, a multipurpose toilet, and a café spot with coffee and snack vending machines.

The stations differ: Hinotori departs from Osaka-Namba, while the Shinkansen departs from Shin-Osaka. Include the journey from your hotel when comparing them.

Shimakaze: Osaka or Kyoto ⇄ Ise-Shima

Shimakaze suits an Ise-Shima trip where the journey itself deserves time. It has three-across leather Premium seats with electric reclining, observation cars, and a double-decker café car. Check the timetable before choosing it: departures are limited.

• Route & time: Osaka-Namba → Iseshi: about 1 hour 36 minutes; → Kashikojima: about 2 hours 23 minutes. Kyoto → Iseshi: about 2 hours; → Kashikojima: about 2 hours 46 minutes. Each route has one round trip daily; Osaka services usually do not run on Tuesdays, Kyoto services on Wednesdays.
• Price: From Osaka-Namba: Iseshi ¥4,350 (about $29), Kashikojima ¥5,460 (about $37). From Kyoto: Iseshi ¥5,120 (about $35), Kashikojima ¥6,150 (about $42).
• How to book: Kintetsu’s English booking site opens one month before at 10:30 a.m. JST. You can also buy tickets at a station or book through Klook.
• Worth it? A regular Osaka-Namba → Iseshi limited express costs ¥3,510 (about $24). Shimakaze adds ¥840 (about $6): decide whether the seat is worth that difference.
• Family & luggage note: Free lockers, free Wi-Fi, and a multipurpose toilet. Salon seats and private compartments are available; compartments cost extra.

Departures are at 10:40 a.m. from Osaka-Namba and 10 a.m. from Kyoto. Return trains leave Kashikojima at 4 p.m. for Osaka-Namba and 2:50 p.m. for Kyoto. An overnight stay in Ise-Shima makes these fixed times easier to accommodate.

A Kintetsu Rail Pass alone is not enough. You still need the limited express ticket and special car fee.

Kyo-train Garaku: Osaka ⇄ Kyoto for the Price of a Regular Ticket

Kyo-train Garaku gives you Japanese-style interiors without an extra fee. There are tatami-like bench seats, window-facing seats, and a car featuring a dry-landscape garden and shoji screens. It is an option for a weekend or holiday journey, provided you do not need a guaranteed seat.

• Route & time: Osaka-umeda → Kyoto-kawaramachi, about 43 minutes. Weekends and holidays only, with 4 round trips.
• Price: ¥410 (about $3), with no supplement.
• How to board: No reservations; all seats are unreserved. At Osaka-umeda, go to the Kyoto Line platforms and look for Kyo-train Garaku on the departure display. The Hankyu 1-Day Pass also covers the ride: Hankyu 1-Day Pass on Klook.
• Worth it? No extra payment is needed. Choose it when the timetable fits and you can accept an unreserved journey.
• Family & luggage note: It can be crowded, and the official information does not list dedicated luggage storage. A large-suitcase day is not the easiest fit.

Departures from Osaka-umeda are 9:32, 11:32, 13:32, and 15:32; from Kyoto-kawaramachi, 10:41, 12:41, 14:41, and 16:41. Check the departure display rather than relying on a fixed platform number.

A pass does not reserve a seat. Ordinary rolling stock may substitute during inspections, so check service notices if the interior is your main reason for riding.

Keihan Premium Car: The Easiest Upgrade in Kyoto

For a journey from Yodoyabashi to Gion-shijo, Keihan Premium Car is a straightforward seat upgrade. This reserved car on Keihan limited express trains costs an extra ¥500 (about $3). It has power outlets at every seat, free Wi-Fi, large tables, and suitcase storage.

• Route & time: Yodoyabashi → Gion-shijo, about 50 minutes.
• Price: ¥990 (about $7), including the base fare and Premium Car fee.
• How to book: Use the English-language cashless platform machines, which accept credit cards and offer seats on the next 5 trains. See Keihan’s official Premium Car page.
• Worth it? Useful when Gion-shijo is your destination and you want a reserved seat on the way.
• Family & luggage note: Suitcase storage is available. Check the seat map before paying if your family wants to sit together.

Online sales through Premium Car Club open 14 days before at 10 a.m. JST, but the website is Japanese-only. With a same-day machine purchase, choose from the seats actually available; your preferred departure may be full.

The Keihan Kyoto–Osaka sightseeing pass covers the base fare only: Keihan Kyoto-Osaka Sightseeing Pass on Klook. You must buy the Premium Car ticket separately.

Sagano Romantic Train: Worth It? (Fall Leaves, Winter Closure)

Choose the Sagano Romantic Train when the Hozu River gorge is the reason for your ride. This sightseeing train runs from Torokko Saga to Torokko Kameoka. Build it into sightseeing around Arashiyama, rather than treating it as transport between Osaka and Kyoto.

• Route & time: Torokko Saga → Torokko Kameoka, about 25 minutes. Normally 8 round trips daily.
• Price: Flat one-way fare: adults ¥880 (about $6), children ¥440 (about $3).
• How to book: The official Sagano booking site opens one month before at midnight JST. Sagano Romantic Train tickets on Klook offer free cancellation up to 48 hours before.
• Worth it? Choose it for gorge views. For a fixed November date, aim to book when official sales open.
• Family & luggage note: Fold strollers and bring them to your seat. Items over 1 meter long are not allowed.

There is usually no service on Wednesdays, although trains also run on Wednesdays during busy spring, summer, and autumn periods. Winter closure runs from December 30 to the end of February.

The current rolling stock retires in 2026, with new trains planned for spring 2027. Fares and operations may change with that transition.

Mahoroba: The JR Way to Nara (Weekends Only)

Mahoroba is worth considering if you want to travel from Osaka by JR and include Horyuji in your plans. It is an all-reserved limited express. Refurbished trains have Wi-Fi, power outlets at every seat, and luggage space, though older rolling stock may substitute.

• Route & time: Osaka → Horyuji → Nara, about 59 minutes. The outbound train leaves Osaka at 9:58 a.m. and reaches Nara at 10:57 a.m.
• Price: ¥2,570 (about $17).
• How to book: JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION opens one month before at 10 a.m. JST. Station machines and JR ticket offices also sell tickets.
• Worth it? Its Horyuji stop suits an itinerary combining Horyuji and Nara. Book the section you intend to ride.
• Family & luggage note: Reserved seating helps you plan where everyone sits; refurbished trains have luggage space.

Normally it runs on weekends and holidays only, with additional weekday services from November 2–13, 2026. Collect online-booked tickets before boarding, and note that JR Nara is a different arrival station from Kintetsu-Nara.

Thunderbird + Hokuriku Shinkansen: Osaka ⇄ Kanazawa

For Kanazawa, book Thunderbird together with the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Since March 2024, Thunderbird no longer runs directly to Kanazawa: you change at Tsuruga through the transfer gates inside the station. This is the longer-distance option beyond Kansai.

• Route & time: Osaka → Tsuruga → Kanazawa, about 2.5 hours including the transfer.
• Price: ¥9,410 (about $64) for ordinary-class reserved seats in the regular season. Prices rise in busier periods and fall in quieter ones.
• How to book: JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION opens one month before at 10 a.m. JST. The Thunderbird ticket on Klook is an open-date ticket valid for 90 days; follow its redemption and seat-reservation instructions.
• Worth it? Choose it because Kanazawa is in your itinerary, rather than adding a long journey solely for the train.
• Family & luggage note: Thunderbird is all-reserved, but dedicated luggage storage is available on only some trains.

Osaka ⇄ Kyoto: Which Train Should You Take?

Choose your stations before choosing your train. Kyoto Station, Kyoto-kawaramachi, and Gion-shijo serve different plans; the fastest station-to-station journey is not automatically the easiest trip from your hotel.

The Shinkansen’s journey time of about 15 minutes covers only the ride from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto Station. Add the travel at both ends before deciding whether it saves time for you.

Riding with Kids and Luggage

Start with the time aboard. Aoniyoshi between Kyoto and Nara takes about 35 minutes, and Sagano about 25 minutes. Hinotori takes about 2 hours 10 minutes; Shimakaze from Osaka-Namba to Iseshi takes about 1 hour 36 minutes.

Hinotori and Shimakaze have free luggage lockers, while Keihan Premium Car has suitcase storage. Aoniyoshi and refurbished Mahoroba trains also have luggage areas. Available equipment does not guarantee an empty space when you board.

Kyo-train Garaku has no dedicated luggage storage listed in its official information and no seat reservations. On a large-suitcase day, consider sending your bags ahead and riding with hand luggage: how luggage forwarding works in Japan.

On Sagano, strollers must be folded and brought to your seat; items over 1 meter long are prohibited. Keep the stroller’s belongings easy to gather before boarding. For planning around a stroller, see using a stroller in Japan.

Children generally pay about half the adult fare, but check age categories and seat-use conditions with each operator. Sagano’s child fare is ¥440 (about $3). Don’t assume every supplement, including the Premium Car fee, follows the same rule.

FAQ

Is the Aoniyoshi train worth it?

If you already need to travel between Kyoto and Nara and would enjoy sightseeing-train seating, it is my first candidate. The ride takes about 35 minutes. A regular limited express remains an option when transport is your only priority.

Can I buy Aoniyoshi tickets on Klook?

No. Use Kintetsu’s official English booking site. The regular Kintetsu limited express products to Nara on Klook are not Aoniyoshi reservations.

Can I use the JR Pass on these trains?

The two JR services—Mahoroba and Thunderbird—are covered. The Kintetsu, Hankyu, Keihan, and Sagano services listed here are not. See the JR Pass article linked above for detailed conditions.

Can I just tap my Suica or ICOCA for a limited express?

Not when a limited express ticket is required. Your IC card pays the base fare; the limited express ticket and any special car fee are separate. Kyo-train Garaku needs only the ordinary base fare.

Does the Thunderbird go all the way to Kanazawa?

No; you change to the Hokuriku Shinkansen at Tsuruga. Check that your booking includes both trains if you are continuing to Kanazawa.

What if the train I want is sold out?

Cancellations can release seats after the initial sale. Sagano may sell standing tickets on the day, but availability is not guaranteed. Check regular limited expresses on the same route or another date, especially if your family needs seats together.

Final Thoughts

You do not need to ride all eight. Choose one that fits: Aoniyoshi between Kyoto and Nara, Garaku for a weekend journey to Kyoto-kawaramachi, or Hinotori when Nagoya is already on your route.

Once you have a route, check operating days, note the release time in JST, and confirm whether the base fare is included. A little preparation lets you choose the part of the journey you actually want to pay for.
